Annual Don Jennings Memorial Awards Dinner
Don Jennings
President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Don also ran for Manistee County
Prosecutor in 1968 and 1972 and while those campaigns may have
also been unsuccessful, the final results were very close.

In the mean time, Don started a practice in private law. Throughout
his career, Don had built a reputation as a strong advocate for his
clients. Don mentored many young attorneys during his career. One of
those young attorneys currently serves as a judge in our community.

Don was always concerned about the rights of others. Don went to
Mississippi in 1964, to help with voter registration and legal
representation. He worked with the United Migrants for Opportunity
during the 1970's, to help the Hispanic migrant workers improve their
way of life. Don was also active in the Lake County NAACP, the
Manistee Democratic Party, the Manistee Labor Federation, the
Choices Women's Advocacy Group and the Manistee Catholic Central
Schools. Don was on the board of Trustees of West Shore Hospital,
the original Board of Directors of Manistee County Habitat for
Humanity as well as several other boards and committees.

After Don's first wife Marge passed away and his children grew up,
Don married Jeanne and they spent their retirement years in Manistee
and Ann Arbor. Don's last court appearance was in 1998 at a hearing
on a motion to admit his son, Patrick, to the State Bar of Michigan. Don
passed away on March 21, 2003.

One thing that Don told his children was that they were here on Earth
to do some small part to make the world a better place. Let us all
accept that challenge.

Thousands of people flocked to
the quaint Northwest Michigan
town of Onekama during the
weekend of June 16-18, 2006
to learn about a challenge
currently facing our state and
nation: Energy.  The Michigan
Energy Fair, held at the
Manistee County Fairgrounds,
was a huge success, educating
2500 people on issues such as
power, and ways to live sustainably
on our earth.

Business and organizations
showcased at the Michigan Energy
Fair gained access to thousands of
fair goers and emphasized their
dedication to renewable energy
and sustainable energy practices.

Don Jennings and President Kennedy
Don Jennings' life had a
profoundly positive and
lasting impact on Manistee
County. Don made a huge
difference in the lives of
everyday people.

In 1960 and 1962 Don
won the nomination as
the Democratic candidate
for the 9th District of the
United States House of
Representatives running
against Robert Griffin.
While both bids for a  U.S.
Congressional seat were
unsuccessful, Don did not
leave Washington D.C.
Empty handed. During the
time he spent in our
nation's capitol, Don
became friends with then
Senator and future
Don Jennings' billboard for his 1962 bid for the
United State House of Representatives.
